My snow days are over

We survived the bulk of the storm here in Western New York last night. Streets had some limited flooding and winds gusted at about 50 mph, but no widespread power outages or problems in my neck of the woods. I personally don’t think it lived up to the hype here, but that’s a usual Buffalo event. The October storm in 2006 was probably our last big storm and it came as a huge surprise.

The lake effect snow came early that year, so leaves hadn’t fallen so the trees had some extra weight and kaplunk they went. And with them went the power. We were without it for a over a week and eventually paid about a million dollars for a generator so we could stop CONSTANTLY bailing out the sump pump from flooding the entire basement. The good part: I had off from school for six days and actually had swimming practice cancelled, too.

Most of the schools were closed due to Sandy today and I am wishing I was still in high school so I could experience the “snow day,” too. Let’s face it, the University of Rochester will never close so being back in college wouldn’t cut it. Just look at this clip from an email that we got during the “snowapocalypse” of 2011:

“Wednesday’s travels will likely be difficult; consider bringing a snow shovel, wear proper clothing and footwear, fill cars with gas and windshield washer fluid. Take smaller steps, look for level surfaces to walk, and use handrails when available.”

Yes, Rochester, I will bring a shovel to class and that will solve my problems. Or, I will skip all my classes.

But alas, I am now a working girl, and at a newspaper, these are some of our biggest days. I did catch a break yesterday and was able to work from home after power went out at the office briefly.

Apart from my real job, I’ve also been doing a bit of work updating the blog and wanted to share those changes with you today.

My “About The Journey” page is now a bit different and reflects the current goals of this space and my life — I’m not a college kid anymore and I’m back in my hometown.

The “Hot Off the Press” tab now brings you some of my work at my current paper, the Tonawanda News. I’ve been on general assignment in a geographical area that spans two of Buffalo’s suburbs since July, and I’ve been writing about arrests, crime, fires and taxes – pretty much any thing that happens in these parts. The added links are just a few of my most memorable stories, and I plan to keep them updated as the press keeps rolling.

Although local news from Tonawanda won’t mean much for many of you, I’d appreciate if you take a quick look at one just to see what I’ve been up to.

And I’ve also done some work on the aesthetics of A Taste of Confidence without changing too much about the overall look.

Tonight will consist of a weight workout, family dinner and baking for our Halloween snack time tomorrow at work. I ‘ll share what I made tomorrow!

Hoping all of you on the Eastern Coast are safe after bearing the brunt of the storm.
